Welcome to the Dance department at Cotham School
Dance is a successful and thriving subject at Cotham School and is taught in Years 7 - 13. A level Dance has been established at Cotham since 1997, and Cotham is the main provider of A level Dance in Bristol.
In Year 7 and 8, all students receive an hour of dance per week, taught in mixed ability tutor groups. In Year 9 dance becomes optional, as part of the PE curriculum. On average over 100 students opt for dance in Year 9.
At KS4, students study GCSE Dance, which is delivered in 5 hours across the two week time table. This year for the first time we are also offering a BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts (Performance) alongside the Drama and Music departments.
At KS5, we deliver AS and A2 level Dance. Presently either AS or A2 level Dance is delivered as a twilight class, (3:05 - 5:05), on Tuesday's and Thursdays. (For 2009/10, AS level is twilight).
The Dance Department is well supported by a strong extra curricular programme. Dance clubs are delivered to Years 7, 8 and 9, and guided rehearsal time is provided for both GCSE and A level Dance. It is an expectation that A' level students use studio free time to rehearse their choreographies.
In addition we have a number of dance companies that perform within school and the wider community throughout the year. Vivid (girls) and Synapse(boys) are auditioned company's for Year 10 and above. This year Vivid junior (Year 9 girls) and junior Synapse (Year 8 and 9 boys) are continuing with their program that has been received with much excitement and praise.
We are very proud of the quality of work produced by these companies and believe they represent the excellence of dance at Cotham school.
The continuing profile of Dance is essential at Cotham, to support this it is important that students perform in assemblies as well as performance evenings.
