Term One at Cotham Post 16

It has been a busy and smile filled term at North Bristol Post 16, and we want to start by congratulating our brilliant
Year 12 students on a superb first few weeks. The step up from GCSE is a big one, but this cohort has embraced the independence and ambition of our community and already looks completely at home in Charnwood. Their enthusiasm through induction and their energy at our lunchtime student mixers have been fantastic to see. We can't wait to see what they do next.
We were also delighted to welcome two new members to the team this term. Mr Vohra and Ms Sandles have joined us as Senior Tutors, and they have already become part of the NBP16 family. Thank you also to all the parents and carers who joined us onsite for our induction event at the start of term, and to those who came along to our community event later in the term. It was wonderful to meet so many of you, and your support makes a real difference to our students.
If you've walked through the canteen lately, you'll have noticed something rather special. Our newly renovated canteen has had a complete refresh, and it's now a bright, welcoming space to grab lunch with friends or take a breather between lessons. It is run by our new caterers, Innovate, who have introduced an exciting new menu that runs throughout the day. There is plenty to look forward to, whether you're after a hearty lunch or a post-study-session snack. Early feedback from students has been very positive, and we'll be keeping a close eye on what becomes the firm favourite!
One of the real highlights of the term was electing our new student leadership team. We were once again blown away by the quality, thoughtfulness and integrity of the applications. Candidates took part in a demanding process of applications, references, interviews, campaigning and hustings speeches, before the final day of voting. We are thrilled to introduce this year's elected representatives:
- Madra, Student President
- Asma, Vice President
- Ataliya, Lead Respect Ambassador
- Gen and Fatima, Co-Leaders of Events and Charity
- Zadie, Leader of Learning and Wellbeing
- Willow, Leader of Environment and Sustainability
- Jwan and Lila, Co-Leaders of Equity and Diversity
We
can't wait to see what they bring to the year ahead, from fundraisers and events to making our community fairer, greener and more supportive for everyone.
Our young people never stop impressing us. A huge well done to James, Myles and Sasha, who took to the stage at the Youth Talks to present on women in sport, video game addiction and the politics of politics! Each spoke with confidence, curiosity and a real sense of purpose. Standing up to share your ideas in front of an audience takes courage, and we are so proud of all three of you.
A very special congratulation goes to Elspeth, who has been selected for the GB squad in artistic swimming. Artistic swimming is a demanding sport in which athletes perform choreographed routines in the water, in perfect synchronisation with their teammates and the music. It requires extraordinary strength, flexibility, breath control and artistry, often while upside down! Making the GB squad is a remarkable achievement. Elspeth, we are cheering you on every stroke of the way.
Congratulations to our Year 13 students who submitted their UCAS applications by the early deadline this term, with their sights set on Oxford, Cambridge, and courses in medicine, veterinary science and dentistry. Behind every one of those applications are hours of hard work and reflection, and we are very proud of them. Further applications are now coming in from the rest of our Year 13 cohort. Students should keep talking to their tutors as they develop their personal statements. Next term, IntoUniversity will be running weekly drop-ins in Charnwood every Wednesday to help students polish their personal statements. Drop in with a draft, or just with an idea.
Our enrichment programme launched this term with a huge range of opportunities, including plenty of student-led options, and two in particular capture what we love about it. Our Gardening Club has been getting hands-on with the great outdoors. Students are learning about growing food and caring for green spaces. They are also finding that time spent with their hands in the soil is good for their wellbeing and a welcome break from screens and revision. It's a lovely way to practise patience, teamwork and sustainability, and we're excited to see what blooms. Meanwhile, 25 of our students have signed up as Reading Buddies, giving up their time each week to read with Year 7 students. For our younger readers, it's a chance to build confidence and enjoy stories with a friendly older role model. For our Post 16 students, it's an opportunity to develop patience, empathy and communication skills, and to remember how powerful it is to be encouraged by someone who believes in you. Thank you to everyone taking part!
This October we marked Black History Month with celebrations woven through both the classroom and the wider life of
the Post 16 community. Teachers have worked hard to review the curriculum for the month, embedding a wide range of learning about Black history, achievement and experience across courses and year groups. We were so proud of our students at the Black Excellence Awards evening, and we would
like to congratulate every Post 16 student who received an award. You are an inspiration to your peers and to the next generation of young people. The fun and learning continued with our lunchtime BHM quiz, which brought out some serious competitive spirit. There was also a fantastic decorate a door competition, which turned our corridors into a gallery of creativity. We then brought the month to a close with an end-of-term BHM party, with plenty of shared food and music. Thank you to everyone who got involved!
A big thank you to everyone who braved the autumn weather to support our open evenings for prospective students. They were a great success, and that was down to our student ambassadors. They welcomed visitors with warmth and enthusiasm, guided families around the site and spoke honestly about their own experiences of life at NBP16. Prospective students and their families were hugely impressed, and many commented on how welcoming and genuine our ambassadors were. You showed visitors exactly what makes our community special, and you did it with real pride. Thank you!
All that remains is to wish our students a well-deserved half-term break. We look forward to our Futures Launch with Year 12 next term, and we'd encourage students to make full use of the Futures section of the hub HERE (student login required) to be ready. This break is an important chance to rest, recharge and look after themselves. We'd encourage them to explore the ideas and resources in our end-of-term Wellbeing Bulletin, which has been emailed to them, and you can preview it HERE.
Have a restful and happy break, everyone. See you next term!
