Why is academic vocabulary important?
Understanding and using academic vocabulary is important to help students succeed. Students need to understand the wording of exam questions and will gain more marks by using accurate academic vocabulary.
Below is a list of words that all KS3 and KS4 students should know. In tutor time each week, students will be shown the word for that week and then students will be asked to recall what they remember about the word later on in the week.
How can parents and carers help?
Parents and carers can help by asking your child to do one or more of the following each week:

Explain the word’s meaning

Use the word accurately in a sentence

Explain synonyms (words with similar meanings) or antonyms (words with opposite meanings)

Spell the word

Draw an image to remind them of its meaning

Recalling words from previous weeks to check they can remember them
